The PROGRESANDO initiative was created to help Hispanic/Latina/o/x students achieve upward economic mobility through careers in health care, while also helping to increase representation and address the shortage of culturally proficient, Spanish-speaking health providers.

Sponsored by Bank of America, a two-year $250,000 grant aimed at supporting Hispanic/Latino/a/e/x students pursuing healthcare careers. The Progresando Initiative addresses the shortage of culturally proficient, Spanish-speaking healthcare providers. The initiative was created to help Hispanic/Latino/a/e/x students achieve upward economic mobility through careers in healthcare, while also helping to increase representation and address the shortage of culturally proficient, Spanish-speaking health providers.

The Office of Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) Initiatives is collaborating with the Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) and the Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) and the University Writing Center to provide students with healthcare-related tutoring, test preparation activities, research and writing lab for nursing and health care program students. All collaborations are aligned with the goals of the Progresando Initiative sponsored by Bank of America.

Critical Area #1

Undergraduate Research and academic writing support are identified as critical for Hispanic/Latino/a/e/x student success

Hispanic/Latino/a/e/x office for HSI Initiatives collaborating with the University Writing Center to offer an undergraduate Healthcare Research and Writing Lab.

The Research and Writing Lab for HealthCare Programs will be modeled after traditional academic success labs with peer-to-peer assistance

Critical Area #2

Healthcare Examination Test Prep and Examination Fees

The Office for HSI Initiatives is collaborating the Student Academic Resource Center (SARC) offering:

  1. One-on-one peer tutor appointments: General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Physics and Psychology/Sociology
  2. MCAT group sessions: General Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry and Physics
  3. Online test preparation resources for students

The Office for HSI Initiatives will sponsor a financial hardship fund for healthcare program examination fees including the Progresando NCLEX Hardship Fund for the College of Nursing

Critical Area #3

Healthcare Professions Education Series

Students and community partners will collaborate together to learn about different health professions.

Topic-based “Lunch and Learns” will be planned in-person and virtually.
